So, winter is here and more than ever, we need to #StayHome.
A classic for me is drinking some wine while reading.
And of course, as a typical bookworm, I'm used to handle many books through the year.
So, here I propose a very simple and yet very, very effective to sterilize books using a vacuum bag and a fridge.
Before explaining the steps, why does it work?
We basically have 2 kinds of organisms: Anaerobe and Aerobe.
Anaerobe organisms do NOT require oxygen and might even die in the presence of it.
Aerobe organisms do require oxygen and might even die in the absence of it.
Once books are already in contact with air under normal conditions, there is a really small probability of living for Anaerobe organisms.
On the other side, books are full of Aerobe organisms, and because of that, suppressing the oxygen will sterilize the book.
Said all that, let's go to the steps:
1) Put the books inside a vacuum bag
2) Take all the air out
3) Put the vacuum bag at the coldest part of the fridge for 7 days
Ah, never use wood bookcases, because the fibres of the wood have the same material as 'modern papers' (cellulose).
Well, I hope this is useful, maybe in the future, I might explain more about book restoration, etc.
